I don't watch a lot of TV. I like House, Lie To Me, and The Mentalist. I also like NCIS, but don't always have time to watch it. I have to admit that there are some reality shows I'm fond of...No, not the Housewives, no matter where they're from, or Survivor or the Batchelor. I like the shows that involve singing, dancing and creative stuff. I love Project Runway and Top Chef. And one of my very favorites is So You Think You Can Dance. And then there's American Idol. Honestly, I can't resist it no matter who the judges are.
I watched American Idol's first show of the new season last night. I have always liked Steven Tyler, one of the new judges. I think he's brilliant at what he does. You all might be surprised that an old lady like myself likes Rock music...but I love it and have been a fan for years. I especially like the old guys like Tyler, Jagger, Bon Jovi, and Bono, and even Tommy Lee. who are still around.
Steven Tyler
Last night, in my estimation, Steven Tyler was great. For the most part, he was relaxed, funny, and authentic. Maybe he was a little easy on some of the contestants, but the season has just begun and I think that will change as it goes on, especially when the number contestants is reduced and the nitty gritty of working with the most talented begins. I suspect some of Tyler's craziness, for which he is well known, will start come out more as the season progresses. I can hardly wait.
Jennifer Lopez
Beautiful as always, JLo was also relaxed and seemed to be having fun. I wonder if the fun part will continue as the stress of having to judge emerging performers continues. Having been a performer herself and in the same situation as some of the youngsters she now has to judge may take a tole on her. She was very empathic and sympathetic to many of the contestants, who appeared to be taking advantage of the situation. I know...who wouldn't?
Randy Jackson
Quite low-keyed last night, Randy appeared to be letting the other two judges lead in making the decisions on who was going to Hollywood. There were a few times when he wanted to say No and changed his mind and went along with Tyler and Lopez. I have a feeling that will change as the show progresses.
All in all, I enjoyed the show last night...except for the last 10 minutes when I fell asleep. I hope that the judges will toughen up on the contestants as time goes on and produce a better winner than the last two. To me, Carrie Underwood and Jennifer Hudson are the only real stars who have come out of Idol in the past few years.

I'm sure it'll get better. I liked Simon too, but after a while he can also be boring.
I usually start watching the show after they've narrowed it down quite a bit. I hate to see people embarrass themselves. I loved Ellen last year.
Good to know there could be a good season. I thought Simon would be sorely missed. Oh - and the Mentalist is one of my favourites too :)
@Sally, Yeah, I do think it gets better as they narrow down the groups. Right now there are too many that seems to be on there for laughs. I loved Ellen too.
@Shalini, I actually enjoyed Simon for what he had to offer: sarcasm, humor, and a few good suggestions on performing. But I think Tyler and Lopez have much more to offer contestants who are serious about a career in show business. Both are fantastic performers with long and successful careers themselves.
I just want to know what's up with Steven Tyler because I think he looks like a GIRL in a man's body. Wow - probably should not have said that here, huh?
I have so little time these days and I don't like wasting it on TV (much).....I usually get hooked on Idol whether I want to or not because I love music but thanks for the heads up....maybe I'll leave it to Bob to become addicted this year and stick to my reading and writing...and of course preparing for the Senior Version of American Idol.....oh but that I could sing instead of play the accordion and the piano!
Interesting review. I've not been watching TV much, though I did peek in on the new Idol. Like DRBJ - it seemed bland, but, then, it was only early auditions and they tend to be so-so, as far as the average talent goes. As for the judges, it's kind of fun to see the new ones realize what a tough job it is to be one. I doubt I'll be hooked on it this season. Lately, once I've watched the news - mostly to check the weather report - if I still feel a need for something to interrupt the silence I live in, I play a DVD. I'm watching the BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice" repeatedly, which provides an advantage in that I can ignore vast portions now and still know what is going on. And for eye candy - Colin Firth in 1995 when it was filmed is hard to beat! slurp. LOL. By the way - I still like his looks and acting and intend to see "The King's Speech" while it's making theater rounds - something I've not done in awhile. I may treat myself to it for my upcoming birthday.

Audrey...for sure Tyler's a little quirky...but that's his thing and he's sure made a lot of money at it. Guess you're not into Rock music. I'll keep you posted on what's going on on Idol. They have a lot of 16-yr-olds this year. That ought to be interesting.
Pride and Prejudice is a great film and I love Colin Firth. He's one of my favorite actors. I'm dying to see the King's Speech. It's supposed to be a wonderful film.
Yes! I'm now scheduled to see it next week with a friend as part of celebrating my birthday. It is what I really want!
I am never surprised when people of any age like rock music because music is music, and we like what we like always. I am curious about Steven Tyler on American idol now, he is a talented musician. I might just have to watch it this season to see!

Julia, I think both Tyler and Lopez will be very helpful when it comes to giving performance advice.They are both top notch performers...We'll just have to wait and see.

Can't say I watchntoo much TV at all but I did catch a few snippets of this while my daughter was watching and I thought Tyler was excellent in his comments. Of course, JLo is worth just looking at!

I watched Idol one or two years but am a big fan of America's Got Talent. I get sick of the whole schtick and can't see how they can go on without Simon. Tyler is just too weird. Which means I ought to watch it. I love weird.

Dolores., I love weird too. And I'm crazy about Steven Tyler...he's just so so talented. I think the contestants will learn a lot from him and Jennifer Lopez...both are such good performers.
Season 10 judges are too bland, and predictable. They say the same thing every time and they like everyone. Each one says basically the same thing as the other. The original reason this show caught on was the real and cutting comments from Simon. Why has the show been dumbed down?
The contestants are sounding like watered down imitators. They sing the songs like the originals but slower. And by the way "Man in the Mirror" is a pop song, not a rock song. Why was that chosen for Rock Night?
Also I don't think Steven Tyler translates into being interesting. He looks old and weird. Not weird in a good way....but weird as in too much plastic surgery. Nothing he says is a surprise. Everything is always..."great job honey, you blew me away". YAWN !
PJV, I disagree about the criticisms. They are much more geared toward actual performing. What did Simon know about that? I think the reason there haven't been any cutting remarks is because the contestants are so good. Real musicians and performers (like the three judges) will understand that and make comments accordingly. I don't think saying someone sounded Karaoke is very helpful. The contestants are getting the right kind of help now...help that builds on their strengths.
Steven Tyler might have been talented as a muscian in his own right back in his day, but so what? He's just not interesting as a judge. I don't care if he tells every contestant to follow your heart and be who you are. That's not rocket science....that's phoning it in from home and playing it safe so the crowd doesn't boo you. Isn't that the same kind of mush that Paula Abdul used to spoon out?
AI rarely produces a true idol who lasts in the real world. The show was always meant to be entertaining by itself for viewers in that dry Brit Humor way. That's why it caught on from the start. I know many people who just don't watch any more because without Simon it's inane.

I watched part of Idol, too, alekhouse, and it was boring, boring. Too bland, too nice, too polite. Where is Simon when you need him?
