Ashram
55
a poem based on the movie Water
After he died they took her to the Ashram and cut off all her hair
She was younger than the rest, whose eyes were glassy, dark and circled, and fought them like a tiger
Barely seven, she would bring them tea and rub their tired shoulders
They waited 'til she blossomed into womanhood beautiful, nubile, enchanting.
She would be taken to some dark and shadowy place and there violated again and again
The meager money she received would buy the food that kept them all barely alive
Then kindness stole her away from the filth and degradation
Safely in the night she was transported to a better place. Thank God
Who knows what residual demons now live within her head to haunt her for the rest of her bittersweet life.

Beautifully written. The fate of so many young girls...but hopefully an 'ashram' will be waiting for them to escape to. Thank you for this lovely poem!
This was hauntingly beautiful yet tragic all the same. Thank you, Alekhouse for writing and sharing this.
Beautiful and, for one perhaps who has not seen the movie, rather mysterious.
Love and peace

So sad. My wife and I saw Water over a year ago and still talk about it. It made an indelible impression as did the other two films in the trilogy. Wouldn't it be wonderful to wake up one morning and discover that all these atrocities had disappeared from the earth forever.
There is beauty in this world and yet there are also so many horrors, and sometimes it makes me sad. May our planet evolve to such a level that as nothingpround mentioned, these atrocities disappeared from our planet forever.
I am thinking how a short essay, can say so much! You accomplished this with your writing.
They are so beautiful. Thanks for sharing the story behind the movie.
Alexhouse: I thought it was a short essay, read it again as a poem, and yes, it does come through as a poem. The message is still haunting.
Poignant and heart-rending - I think you've captured the helplessness in the film so well. I'm so ashamed to admit that these practices still go on despite the drive against them. Education is the only answer to stifle these age-old horrifying traditions.
Thank you for a beautifully written poem.
Beautifully written and heart grabbing. There are so many things that need to be brought into the light. Thanks Alekhouse.
It is sad to know that stories like this, and many of them unheard, seem to have no end. Sigh. Thanks for sharing this reminder that cruelty and greed exist.
Alek this was beautiful. It makes me want to see the movie. I had never heard of it before.
This sounds like a very sad movie, but I would be interested in watching it. I prefer movies that show a range of emotions.
If the movie is as powerful as your poem, it will be well worth my time to see it. Great hub; your poem is very moving.
Fantastic movie! The poem describes it beautifully. I adore the poet in you!
I have not watched the but your poetry is simply fantastic...
I have not seen this movie, but I am glad that you shared it with us.
I enjoyed your Poem. Thanks.

This is beautiful, alek. So sad and so lyrical. Is it your tribute to the Indian widows as in the film "Water", or something more universal?
